Felt board activities preschool aged children can do, are a great way for them to interact playfully. There are many ways you can incorporate felt board activities into any lesson plan. You can literally make a felt board for any subject that you teach. They are fun for the children to play with and help them learn through play. This article will explain a could of felt board activities that you can try in your class room.
Feed The Monkeys - This is a great way for children to learn counting skills through play. Cut five monkeys out of brown felt, and fifteen bananas out of yellow felt. Number the monkeys one through five, on their bellies. Glue the monkeys on a flannel board. Apply Velcro on the back on the bananas. The children will then have to identify the numbers that are printed on the monkey’s bellies. They will have to place the correct number of bananas in front of that money to feed them. This will be fun and educational, they will love it!
Fishy Counting - Cut ten fish out of different colored felt. Glue a large piece of felt onto cardboard, make the felt is secured to the cardboard and will not pull off easily. Apply Velcro to the back of the fish. You can decorate the fish if you want to as well. Use googly eyes and glitter glue to make them look more realistic. However, the funnier they look, the more the children will enjoy them.
During circle time, have the children count along with you white you put one fish up on the board at a time. You can do this with as many fish as they are capable of counting with you. When you have put all of the fish on the board, start counting backwards. Take the fish off the board as you do this.
Another fun way that you can use this board to work on colors is with the color game. Put a red fish onto the board and say, "I am a red fish and I see a blue little fishy looking at me". Have the children identify, and hand you the blue fish. Take the red fish off the board and do it again, this time using the blue fish. This helps the children work on color skills, and they will enjoy helping you find the right fish to put on the board!
Felt board can be a great way to get children interested in learning. It helps them learn through play and touch, which studies have shown, is the best way for children to learn. Allowing the children to help you create the board is even better because they will be proud to use what the have created. They will also have more respect for it, and will be more careful not to ruin what they helped to create. Make sure that they board are bright, colorful and cheerful. Remember, you can always make more so let the children use it whenever possible.
